About me
My name is Frederic Dubois, and I am the owner of Diegetix Sound LLC.
Founded in 2014, Diegetix Sound was created to support both my professional and personal projects. Over the years, I have built a comfortable and fully equipped home studio capable of handling audio productions in 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos formats.
I was born in France several decades ago. In the early 1980s, when FM radio broadcasting was finally deregulated, I became one of thousands of teenagers captivated by the magic of radio. I spent my days playing vinyl records and speaking into microphones as a young radio DJ. That was the moment I discovered my passion for sound — and I knew it would shape the rest of my life.
After attending film school in Paris, I completed a short internship before joining Metropole Television (M6) in 1987 as a sound technician. At the time, it was still a small network. Today, M6 is one of France’s leading television broadcasters.
While I enjoyed the fast-paced world of broadcast television, I was irresistibly drawn toward sound post-production. Two years later, I joined Audiophase, one of Paris’s respected audio post facilities. On my first day, the owner, Sylvain, simply told me, “You’ll become a sound editor.” I wasn’t entirely sure what that meant yet — but I was eager to learn.
Back then, digital audio technology was still in its infancy. I learned to work on the AMS Audiofile, an early digital workstation with a green monochrome screen, 8 audio tracks, massive external hard drives, and real-time backups recorded onto U-Matic tapes. Primitive by today’s standards, but revolutionary at the time.
During those years, I had the privilege of working with the Cousteau Society and the legendary French comedy troupe Les Nuls.
Eventually, I bought my first Apple Macintosh IIci along with Sound Tools® from a little-known company called Digidesign. In 1992, I upgraded to Pro Tools®, and more than three decades later, it remains my primary creative tool.
In 1993, Les Nuls moved into feature filmmaking with La Cité de la Peur (Fear City). Director Alain Berberian brought me onto the project to help preserve the distinctive sound style we had developed during the television years.
A few years later, I transitioned entirely into cinema and never looked back. I worked as supervising sound editor on numerous successful French comedies like Asterix and Obelix vs Cesar for Pathé, Gaumont, and independent productions. Around 2005, I joined Europacorp’s sound editing team, contributing to internationally successful action films such as Taken 2, Taken 3, and Colombiana and many more.
Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2014, I have continued working as a freelance sound professional for both film and television productions across various post-production houses. My credits include Promising Young Woman, The Gorge, Charm City Kings, Jawan, The Ambush, Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs, among others.
Beyond post-production, I have always been passionate about recording sound effects. In the 1990s, I released several weapon sound libraries, including EFX Guns and The Ultimate Weapon Library.
In 2026, my work received a Golden Reel Award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE), along with an Emmy nomination for The Gorge.
